The best of the Hill Country isn't on the interstate — it's on the ranch-to-market roads, where the limestone bluffs open up, the live oaks arch over the pavement, and every spring the bluebonnets turn the shoulders blue.

This loop packs swimming holes, a river-town main street, and the prettiest driving miles within an hour of Austin into a single tank of gas. Run it clockwise in spring for the flowers, counterclockwise in summer so the swimming hole hits mid-afternoon.

    Hamilton Pool Road — the canyon country

    Natural wonder

    The collapsed-grotto pool is the postcard, but reservations sell out — book weeks ahead or enjoy the equally gorgeous drive and save the swim for Krause Springs down the road, the locals' pick anyway.

    Spicewood — Krause Springs & barbecue

    Swim & lunch

    Thirty-two springs feed a cypress-shaded natural pool that's been family-run since the 1950s. Pair it with the area's cult-favorite barbecue joint and you've built a perfect Texas Saturday by noon.

    Marble Falls — the river town

    Main street

    A proper courthouse-square town on the Colorado River: a bakery famous since 1929 (the pie case is not a suggestion, it's a mandate), lakeside parks, and antique shops for the back-seat crowd.

    The granite country — US-281 north

    Scenery

    The pink granite domes around Granite Shoals hint at their giant cousin, Enchanted Rock, an hour west. In March and April this stretch is bluebonnet central — pull-offs fill up, so patience and hazard lights.

    RM 1431 east — the roller-coaster road home

    The drive itself

    The 1431 run back through Jonestown and Lago Vista is the driving-est road in the region — sweeping lake views, real elevation changes, and a sunset over Lake Travis if you've timed dinner right.
